Local Groups Awarded Grants from Big Sur Marathon Foundation

More than a quarter million dollars distributed to 100 groups at annual Grant Reception

CARMEL, CA. — The nonprofit Big Sur Marathon Foundation distributed over $275,000 in grants to 100 regional organizations at a reception Tuesday evening in Monterey.

Youth organizations, sports teams, community service groups, and schools were among the groups who received funding from the Big Sur Marathon Foundation. Local grant groups from the Monterey Peninsula, Big Sur, and the Salinas Valley conversed and enjoyed refreshments while waiting to accept their checks from Doug Thurston, Executive Director of the Big Sur Marathon Foundation, and other Foundation representatives.

Since its inaugural event in 1986, the Big Sur International Marathon organization has distributed more than $5 million in grants, primarily to organizations that have volunteered to support the Foundation’s running race events throughout the year. The Big Sur Marathon Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to “create beautiful running events that promote health and fitness in the community.” The Foundation raises funds primarily through race registrations, sponsor contributions, and individual donations in order to fulfill its charter to give back to the community.

In addition to supporting local groups, the marathon is also a vehicle to assist charitable organizations in their own fundraising efforts. Individuals sign up to run the Big Sur International Marathon while obtaining sponsors for their cause. Several hundred thousand dollars were raised to benefit 15 national and regional charities from the 2018 marathon.
