Bus Departure Times and Locations
Ride the Bus!
Taking the free race-provided transportation to the start is required (unless you are staying in Big Sur) if you are participating in the Marathon (including Boston 2 Big Sur & Big Sur VIP), the 21-Miler, the 11-Miler, and for all legs of the Marathon Relay. All participants in the marathon should visit the Transportation Desk at the Health & Fitness Expo to pick up their free bus ticket, map and any information. 21-Miler, 11-Miler, and Relay entrants will receive transportation information at their bib pick-up areas.
Highway 1 is closed to private vehicles early race morning and there is no parking or runner drop off at any start area.
Buses to return runners to their morning departure locations will leave from the finish village between 10 AM and 2 PM.
Click HERE for more information and a map of bus departure locations and times for all race distances.
The 12K and 5K are out-and-back courses from the finish area in Carmel. Entrants in the 12K and 5K are responsible for their own transportation to the start of their event at the Marathon finish (Highway 1 and Rio Road) unless staying in Big Sur. Parking for the 12K and 5K is available at the Crossroads Carmel shopping center and at the Barnyard Shopping Village one block north of Rio Road.
For runners staying in Big Sur hotels, motels, and campgrounds, there will be two race-morning shuttles running continuous loops on Highway 1 from 4:45 until 5:45 a.m. to collect runners and shuttle them to the start line. One shuttle will do a continuous loop of about two miles north of the start (to River Inn) and another a two-mile loop south of the start (to Deetjen’s). Runners will wait on Highway 1 for this shuttle to take them to the start. There will be shuttles from the finish area back to Big Sur between about 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Please stop by the transportation desk at the expo for more details. (Note that if you are staying in Big Sur and running a non-marathon distance, you would still catch one of the Big Sur shuttles to the marathon start. Separate shuttles from the marathon start will take runners north to their start location if they are running a non-marathon race distance or legs 2, 3 or 4 of the Relay.)
